Battery life may not be the most spectacular feature unveiled during an iPhone keynote, but it is probably one of the improvements users notice most in everyday use. On eSIM-only models, Apple claims up to 45 hours of video playback, compared with 36 hours for the iPhone 18 Pro. The company has also introduced a measurement designed to better represent everyday use, combining web browsing, messaging, photography, social media, gaming and video.

Under this scenario, the iPhone 18 Pro reaches 24 hours of use, while the Pro Max climbs to 30 hours.

The improvement is not simply about fitting a bigger battery inside the phone. The A20 Pro, manufactured using a 2nm process, also helps reduce power consumption. Apple has redesigned the cooling system as well, adopting a new vapor chamber intended to allow the processor to maintain its performance for longer without wasting as much energy as heat.

On paper, the Pro Max therefore becomes the obvious winner when battery life is the main consideration. This time, the difference compared with the regular Pro is far from negligible.

European models tell a slightly different story

There is an important detail hidden behind Apple’s most impressive numbers.

Some international iPhone 18 Pro models retain a physical nano-SIM slot, unlike eSIM-only versions sold in markets such as the United States. That SIM tray takes up internal space that can otherwise be used for additional battery capacity.

As a result, official battery figures are slightly lower on models equipped with a physical SIM tray.

Unfolding the phone and using its large inner display naturally increases power consumption, reducing video playback to 31 hours. Under Apple’s new mixed-use scenario, with similar amounts of time spent on both screens, the Duo reaches 24 hours.

Despite the compromises normally associated with foldable phones, it therefore manages to match the iPhone 18 Pro in typical use.

Charging remains competitive too: 50% in around 20 minutes with a sufficiently powerful USB-C adapter, while MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging reach up to 25W.

A bigger change than it might seem

To me, this is one of the most meaningful improvements of this generation. Premium smartphones are already incredibly fast, while yearly camera improvements can sometimes be difficult to notice without direct comparisons. Several additional hours of battery life, however, immediately change the experience.

The iPhone Duo deserves particular attention. Early foldable smartphones often sacrificed battery life in exchange for their unusual form factor. The fact that Apple can approach Pro Max figures when the Duo operates using its outer display shows how central energy efficiency has become to smartphone design.

Independent testing will still be needed to verify Apple’s claims. Official battery tests are performed under controlled conditions, while real-world endurance varies considerably depending on mobile networks, screen brightness, apps and camera usage.
