iPadOS 27, an update that draws a line

With iPadOS 27, Apple is sending a pretty clear message: the iPad keeps moving closer to the Mac, but not every model gets to come along for the full ride. The new version of the system, introduced at WWDC26, focuses on more artificial intelligence, a redesigned Siri, refined performance, and a logical continuation of the big shift started with iPadOS 26.

On paper, there is nothing shocking here. Apple moves forward, older chips eventually fall out of the update cycle, and the heaviest features clearly require more memory and more power. In real life, though, the news may sting a little for some users, especially those still using a 2018 iPad Pro or an iPad mini 5. These devices do not necessarily feel outdated in everyday use. Yet they will not be part of the iPadOS 27 journey.

The iPads compatible with iPadOS 27

The compatibility list is still fairly generous, but it creates a clear separation between the generations Apple still sees as “modern” and those now considered too old.

iPadOS 27 can be installed on these models:

  • iPad Pro 11-inch 2nd generation and later
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch 4th generation and later
  • iPad Air 4th generation and later
  • iPad 9th generation and later
  • iPad mini 6th generation and later

In other words, iPads powered by the oldest A12-family chips are gradually leaving the stage. That makes sense from a technical point of view, but it also confirms a broader trend: the iPad is no longer just a tablet for consuming content. Apple wants it to become a more ambitious, more productive, more intelligent machine. And that ambition comes with a hardware cost.

The models left behind

The biggest losers are the iPad Air 3, iPad mini 5, iPad 8, first-generation 11-inch iPad Pro, and third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro. The 2018 iPad Pro situation is probably the most interesting, and maybe the most frustrating. Those models have long felt like they had plenty of life left, thanks to their still-modern design, Face ID, USB-C, and performance that remains perfectly fine for many tasks.

This is where Apple’s change in direction becomes obvious. In the past, an iPad felt old mainly when it became slow. Now it can also feel old because it no longer fits Apple’s AI strategy. That is not quite the same thing. An iPad may still open Safari, play videos, handle email, and run plenty of apps, while still being considered insufficient for the next big software step.

Compatibility does not mean equality

This is the point that really matters. Having iPadOS 27 does not mean getting every iPadOS 27 feature. Apple Intelligence and Siri AI require recent chips, with a very clear preference for iPads running Apple Silicon. M1 models and later remain in a good position for many intelligent features, while the most advanced experiences are reserved for better-equipped machines.

That is understandable. Running AI models locally, understanding personal context, acting across multiple apps, generating or transforming content: all of this requires much more than a simple visual refresh. But from the user’s side, it creates a slightly strange situation. Two iPads compatible with iPadOS 27 may deliver very different experiences.

This is probably the future of Apple updates: a shared base for many models, then premium features reserved for the most powerful devices.

The European case makes things more complicated

For users in France and across the European Union, there is another detail that changes how this update should be read: Siri AI will not be available at launch on iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 in the EU. Apple points to constraints linked to the Digital Markets Act, with disagreements around how competing assistants should access data and system actions.

The result is simple: even with a recent, compatible, and powerful enough iPad, the experience will not necessarily be identical from one region to another. For an update so focused on AI, that is not a small detail. It may even make iPadOS 27 feel less spectacular in Europe than in other markets.

My take as a tech blogger

iPadOS 27 feels like a transition update, but a serious one. It does not simply add a couple of visible features: it quietly redefines what Apple expects from a modern iPad. The list of compatible models is still long, but the real boundary is shifting toward M-series chips and available memory.

I do find it unfortunate that some still very capable iPad Pro models are already being excluded. At the same time, Apple is clearly preparing a platform where AI, multitasking, and advanced features can no longer rely on hardware compromises from several years ago. iPadOS 27 does not bury older iPads. It simply reminds us that the future of Apple’s tablet will be much more demanding.

FAQ

Which iPads can install iPadOS 27?

The 11-inch iPad Pro from the 2nd generation onward, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro from the 4th generation onward, the iPad Air from the 4th generation onward, the iPad from the 9th generation onward, and the iPad mini from the 6th generation onward.

Which iPads are no longer compatible?

The iPad Air 3, iPad mini 5, iPad 8, first-generation 11-inch iPad Pro, and third-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro are no longer supported.

Will every compatible iPad get Apple Intelligence?

No. Compatibility with iPadOS 27 does not guarantee access to every Apple Intelligence feature. Models with an M1 chip or later are much better positioned, while some advanced features require even more power.

Will Siri AI be available in France on iPadOS 27?

Not at launch. Apple has said Siri AI will not initially be available on iPadOS 27 in the European Union
