What if you could see your refurbished iPhone before buying it, examine any scratches and check its battery health? With CertiDeal, you now can. Thanks to a new shopping experience featuring real photos of individual devices, customers can choose the exact smartphone they will receive.

Until now, buying a refurbished phone online generally meant selecting a model, storage capacity, colour and cosmetic grade. But one important question remained: what will my phone actually look like when it arrives?

With this new feature, CertiDeal is changing the way refurbished smartphones are sold. Instead of simply choosing from a category of devices with a similar cosmetic condition, customers can now see, compare and select a specific phone based on its actual appearance, any visible signs of wear, battery health and price.

Why buying a refurbished iPhone with real photos changes the shopping experience

By definition, a refurbished smartphone is a device that has already been used. Even after being inspected, cleaned and repaired where necessary, it may retain some cosmetic marks from its previous life.

Two iPhone 14 devices with 128GB of storage and the same cosmetic grade do not necessarily look identical. One might have minor scratches on its frame, while the other could show a few micro-scratches on its screen. Their battery capacities may also differ.

To simplify purchasing decisions, the refurbished smartphone market has gradually developed a system of standardised cosmetic grades. These classifications help customers understand the general condition they can expect, but they do not always reveal the individual characteristics of each device.

This creates a paradox: when consumers spend several hundred euros on a refurbished product, they may still have to make their decision without ever seeing the exact phone they will receive.

CertiDeal aims to eliminate this uncertainty by introducing a shopping experience based on actual photographs of the smartphones available for purchase.

Choose your phone, not just its cosmetic grade

CertiDeal’s new real-photo selection experience is built around a simple idea: customers should know exactly what they are buying before placing an order.

"Real
Real photos of our devices: choose your refurbished iPhone by looking at photographs of the actual phone you will receive.

For devices included in this experience, every smartphone is presented individually. The photographs are not generic marketing images representing a particular model. Instead, they show the exact device available for sale.

Customers can therefore examine the phone’s characteristics before confirming their purchase. Once they have made their choice, that specific device is prepared and shipped.

This approach introduces several important improvements to the way refurbished smartphones are presented and purchased.

High-definition photos of the phone you will actually receive

The first major change is that the images displayed correspond to the actual phone. Customers can examine different sides of the device, including its screen, back panel and frame, through several high-definition photographs.

This is particularly useful when purchasing a refurbished smartphone. A generic product image helps identify a model, but it does not provide meaningful information about the condition of the individual unit being offered.

With real-photo selection, this limitation disappears. You can see what your smartphone looks like before it even leaves CertiDeal’s refurbishment facilities.

Zoom in to examine scratches and signs of wear

Some customers prefer a phone with as few visible marks on the screen as possible. Others are comfortable with minor scratches on the back or frame, particularly if they plan to use a protective case.

"Zoom
See what you can examine with CertiDeal’s real-photo zoom feature.

Thanks to the zoom function, you can inspect any visible cosmetic imperfections in the photographs and decide whether they meet your expectations.

The objective is not to eliminate every normal sign of previous use. Instead, it is to give customers the opportunity to identify these marks before making a purchase.

Cosmetic condition becomes something buyers can assess for themselves, rather than information they must interpret solely from a standard grade.

Check battery health before placing your order

Battery health is one of the main concerns for people considering a refurbished iPhone. With CertiDeal’s new experience, battery information is directly associated with each individual phone.

"Battery
Check the battery capacity of your future refurbished iPhone before making your choice.

On eligible product listings, CertiDeal displays battery capacity information as a percentage or percentage range. This allows customers to compare different phones based not only on their cosmetic condition but also on their battery health.

This figure refers to the battery’s maximum capacity compared with its original capacity, as reported through Apple’s battery health information in iOS. It should not be confused with a guarantee of a specific battery life: actual autonomy also depends on the model, applications, screen brightness and individual usage habits.

The real innovation lies in transparency: customers have access to another meaningful piece of information about the exact phone they are considering purchasing.

A unique, identifiable and traceable device

Each smartphone included in this experience has information that distinguishes it from other units, including the last five digits of its IMEI number.

The IMEI is a unique identifier associated with a mobile device. Displaying part of this identifier helps distinguish the selected phone and supports its traceability throughout the purchasing process.

This is a fundamental aspect of the experience: the phone shown in the photographs is the exact device that will be shipped after the order is confirmed.

In other words, customers are no longer purchasing a device that will later be selected from a stock of supposedly equivalent phones. They are choosing an individually identified product.

"CertiDeal

The new purchasing process has been designed to maintain the simplicity of traditional online shopping while offering more detailed information about the available devices.

Start by selecting the iPhone model that best suits your needs. Screen size, camera quality, performance, storage capacity and budget remain the main criteria when comparing smartphones.

For eligible models, you can then access the selection of individual devices with real photographs. Each phone is presented with its own characteristics, allowing you to compare the available units.

You can examine the images, zoom in on potential signs of wear, review battery information and compare prices before making your decision.

This gives you the freedom to prioritise what matters most. A phone with a small cosmetic mark may represent excellent value if it is offered at a more affordable price. Alternatively, you may prefer a device whose appearance is as close as possible to that of a brand-new smartphone.

Once you have found the phone that meets your expectations, simply complete your order. CertiDeal will then prepare and ship the individual device you selected.

Which refurbished iPhones are available with real photos?

The rollout of this shopping experience is progressive. It now includes selected devices from the main iPhone generations, from the iPhone 12 series up to the iPhone 17 Pro, depending on the models and individual units in stock.

iPhone 12: an affordable smartphone with greater visibility into its condition

The iPhone 12 family includes the standard model, iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. These smartphones remain an accessible option for customers looking for an Apple device without paying the price of a newer model.

With real photographs, customers can examine the condition of available units and make more informed decisions about the balance between appearance, battery health and price. This is particularly useful when choosing an older-generation device where individual signs of wear may vary.

iPhone 13: compare individual devices before ordering

The iPhone 13 series remains an interesting choice for consumers seeking a balance between performance, photography, battery life and affordability.

Rather than relying entirely on cosmetic grades, buyers can examine the individual characteristics of eligible iPhone 13 devices and choose the one that best matches their preferences.

iPhone 14: examine each phone’s condition in detail

For customers looking for a relatively recent iPhone while keeping their spending under control, the iPhone 14 series offers several options, including the standard, Plus, Pro and Pro Max versions.

Real photos make it easier to assess the differences between individual devices. Customers can inspect visible marks and consider battery condition alongside the price before selecting their preferred phone.

iPhone 15: see the exact device before buying

With the iPhone 15 series, consumers can enjoy more recent Apple technology while benefiting from the potential savings offered by refurbished products.

For eligible devices, high-definition photos and battery health information help customers compare individual units within the same generation and choose a phone that meets both their technical and cosmetic expectations.

iPhone 16: a recent generation with greater purchasing transparency

The iPhone 16 family is also included in the rollout of CertiDeal’s real-photo experience. The range includes the standard model, Plus, Pro, Pro Max and iPhone 16e.

For buyers considering a relatively recent smartphone, being able to inspect the exact unit before purchase provides an additional level of reassurance, especially when comparing different prices and battery conditions.

iPhone 17 Pro: the latest generation joins the real-photo experience

The iPhone 17 Pro has also joined CertiDeal’s selection of devices available through the new shopping experience.

Customers can inspect eligible units through real photographs, examine their cosmetic condition and review battery health information before ordering.

This expansion shows that choosing an individually photographed device is not limited to older iPhone generations. The experience also extends to newer premium smartphones.

Availability varies according to stock and configuration. CertiDeal intends to continue expanding the experience to additional models and generations.

Are cosmetic grades still useful when real photos are available?

Introducing real-photo selection does not mean that cosmetic grades are becoming irrelevant. At CertiDeal, the classifications Fair, Very Good, Excellent and Premium continue to provide a useful reference for understanding a smartphone’s general appearance.

These categories simplify the initial comparison. A device classified as Fair may show more visible signs of previous use, while higher grades correspond to different cosmetic standards.

However, photographs provide an additional level of detail. Two phones with the same cosmetic grade are not necessarily identical. Some buyers may be more concerned about scratches on the screen, while others might focus on the condition of the back panel or frame.

By making each phone’s appearance visible, CertiDeal allows customers to personalise their choice without removing the usefulness of cosmetic grading.

Real photos, 32 quality checks and a 24-month warranty: complementary guarantees of quality

Greater transparency about a smartphone’s appearance does not replace the technical inspections that must take place before it can be sold.

At CertiDeal, devices undergo a professional refurbishment and inspection process carried out in the company’s facilities in France. Each smartphone goes through 32 quality checks designed to verify its main functions and compliance with CertiDeal’s quality standards.

These checks cover essential components and features required for everyday use. While technical inspections focus on making sure a phone works correctly, the new real-photo experience helps customers understand the appearance of the individual unit they are buying.

Alongside these two elements, CertiDeal provides important protections for customers purchasing through its international website.

21 days to change your mind

CertiDeal offers customers 21 days to change their mind after receiving their device, in accordance with the applicable return conditions.

This gives buyers time to examine their refurbished iPhone in person and make sure it meets their expectations and everyday needs.

The return conditions apply to eligible devices purchased through the international CertiDeal website, including those selected using real photographs.

24 months of warranty coverage

CertiDeal also provides a 24-month warranty on eligible refurbished devices, offering protection against covered technical faults according to the warranty terms and conditions.

Extended warranty options may also be available for customers who want additional coverage beyond the standard period.

These three aspects work together: quality checks verify the device’s functionality, real photos provide visibility before purchase, and return and warranty policies offer reassurance after delivery.

From trust-based refurbishment to evidence-based purchasing

This development brings the refurbished smartphone market closer to the second-hand car market. When consumers buy a used car, they naturally expect to see photographs of the exact vehicle, examine its condition and review its individual characteristics before making a decision.

CertiDeal applies the same principle to refurbished smartphones: allowing customers to make purchasing decisions based on information about the actual device, rather than relying exclusively on standardised descriptions.

The result is a more informed shopping experience in which the product itself becomes central to the decision-making process.

Promising adoption in the first few weeks

The new shopping experience quickly attracted consumer interest following its launch.

According to the initial figures communicated by CertiDeal just a few weeks after introducing the feature, orders placed through this new experience already represented 20% of the company’s total orders.

This figure refers to the initial observation period following the launch and should not be interpreted as a permanent share of sales.

Nevertheless, it provides an encouraging indication of consumer interest in a purchasing process that makes it possible to compare smartphones based on their individual characteristics.

By improving product visibility, CertiDeal also aims to reduce the gap between customer expectations before purchase and their perception of the phone upon delivery.

An innovation placing CertiDeal at the forefront of Europe’s refurbished smartphone market

With its real-photo selection experience, CertiDeal is positioning itself at the forefront of innovation in the European refurbished smartphone market.

Beyond the benefits offered to consumers, this initiative demonstrates the company’s ability to turn its operational expertise and direct control over the refurbishment process into a genuine competitive advantage.

This innovation is difficult to replicate at scale. For marketplaces that do not own or directly manage their inventory, implementing a similar system depends on the ability of their third-party sellers to provide reliable, device-specific information.

For professional refurbishers, the challenge is different. Delivering this level of transparency requires highly industrialised production processes that integrate photography, device identification and traceability into the refurbishment workflow without reducing operational efficiency.

By directly managing its inventory and refurbishment operations, CertiDeal benefits from a structural advantage in its ability to deploy this experience on a large scale, further strengthening its differentiation within the European market.

Towards even greater transparency for every device

With real photographs and 360-degree videos already available for eligible devices, CertiDeal enables customers to examine their future smartphone from multiple angles and assess its cosmetic condition more accurately before buying.

But CertiDeal’s ambitions extend further. Among the developments being considered is access to the history of any repairs performed on an individual device, providing customers with greater insight into its refurbishment journey.

The long-term objective is clear: progressively reduce the information gap between refurbishment professionals and consumers before purchase, helping make transparency a new standard in the industry.
