The company used its “Surprise and Shine” keynote to introduce the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 12, Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5.

The foldable naturally stole the spotlight, but the bigger picture is just as interesting. Apple appears ready to move beyond the familiar annual iPhone refresh and explore a new phase for its hardware ecosystem.

iPhone Duo finally changes the formula

The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first serious departure from the traditional iPhone format in years. When opened, the device offers a display of roughly 7.7 inches, turning it into something halfway between an iPhone and a compact iPad.

Inside is Apple’s A20 Pro chip, while storage configurations reach up to 2TB. Apple has also added support for the USB-C Apple Pencil, although not the Apple Pencil Pro.

The biggest obstacle is predictable: price. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, firmly placing it in premium territory.

Pre-orders are scheduled for October 16, with availability beginning October 23.

Apple has arrived late to the foldable market compared with Samsung and several Chinese manufacturers. That may not matter much. The company has often preferred to enter an established category only when it believes the hardware, software and ecosystem can work together convincingly.

iPhone 18 Pro gets much more serious about photography

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max look more conventional, but some of their upgrades could have a greater impact on everyday use.

Both models use the new A20 Pro, Apple’s first smartphone chip manufactured using a 2nm process. Photography is where things get particularly interesting.

Apple has introduced a variable aperture system, along with manual controls for aperture and shutter speed. These features push the Pro line closer to the experience offered by dedicated cameras, at least in terms of creative control.

There are also new photographic styles and tools designed to verify image authenticity. Battery life improves too, with the iPhone 18 Pro Max reaching up to 45 hours of video playback, according to Apple.

Pre-orders begin September 12, with sales starting September 18.

Apple Watch pushes further into health

Apple Watch Series 12 continues Apple’s gradual transformation of the smartwatch into a health-oriented device.

The new generation uses the S11 chip, upgraded health sensors and more durable materials, including ceramic elements. Apple Watch Ultra 4 takes the same philosophy further while targeting users who need longer battery life, with Apple promising around two days of use.

Another notable addition is Audio Intelligence, designed to improve the way the watches handle sound and contextual audio features.

AirPods 5 make noise cancellation more accessible

AirPods 5 bring a welcome change: active noise cancellation is now standard.

Apple has also improved audio quality and ANC performance. The distinction between configurations is therefore less about basic listening features and more about extras such as wireless charging.

It is not a revolutionary update, but it makes the entry-level AirPods considerably more interesting.

iOS 27 completes a hardware-heavy keynote

The new devices arrive alongside iOS 27, scheduled for release on September 14.

Apple continues to expand its AI-powered Siri features, although its strategy is becoming more complicated. Some advanced AI capabilities will operate with daily usage limits, while broader access may require an additional fee.

That introduces a new question for Apple’s ecosystem: how much artificial intelligence will remain part of the standard device experience, and how much will eventually become a paid service?

A keynote that opens a new chapter

For me, the iPhone Duo matters more than its first-year sales figures.

Apple did not invent the foldable smartphone, and it certainly did not arrive early. What it can do is turn the format into something mainstream among users who previously had little interest in foldables.

The iPhone 18 Pro remains the safer and probably more important product commercially, but the Duo is the device that gives this event its identity. After years of relatively predictable iPhone evolution, Apple finally has a new hardware format to develop.

FAQ

What is the iPhone Duo?

It is Apple’s first foldable iPhone, featuring a large internal display that expands the available workspace when the device is opened.

How much does the iPhone Duo cost?

The starting price is $1,999.

When will the iPhone 18 Pro be available?

Pre-orders open September 12, with sales beginning September 18.

What are the main iPhone 18 Pro upgrades?

Highlights include the A20 Pro chip, variable aperture photography, manual camera controls and improved battery life.

When will iOS 27 be released?

Apple plans to release iOS 27 on September 14.

Apple’s September 2026 event was anything but routine.
