Yet the latest information points in the opposite direction: Apple reportedly does not plan to release camera-equipped AirPods in 2026. The launch is still expected in 2027.

And behind that delay lies a project far more ambitious than simply creating another pair of wireless earbuds.

An Apple video reveals AirPods with cameras

The leak reportedly comes from the Release Candidate of macOS 26.7, where Apple apparently left behind a demonstration video focused on Visual Intelligence.

The footage shows AirPods using their visual surroundings together with Siri. Given the timing of the discovery, it was easy to assume the product was almost ready for launch.

Apparently, that isn’t the case.

According to information reported by Bloomberg, camera-equipped AirPods remain scheduled for 2027. Apple has reportedly been working on different versions of the concept for several years, with at least two projects known by the codenames B790 and B798.

That distinction may explain much of the confusion surrounding their release date.

Apple reportedly developed two different versions

B790 is said to be based on the AirPods Pro 3, adding new sensors and artificial intelligence features. This appears to be the version shown in the video discovered in macOS.

B798 would be considerably more ambitious: a new generation of AirPods Pro designed from the beginning around cameras.

Bloomberg had already reported in May that development of camera-equipped AirPods had reached an advanced stage, with prototypes approaching their final design. In June, however, the publication pointed to a late-2027 release.

The hardware may therefore be progressing quickly. The real challenge could lie elsewhere: building the artificial intelligence capable of making those sensors genuinely useful.

These cameras wouldn’t be for taking photos

The word “camera” can be misleading here. Apple apparently isn’t trying to turn AirPods into miniature photography devices.

The sensors are expected to be low-resolution and primarily intended to analyze the environment, providing contextual information to Siri and Apple’s AI features.

That’s where the idea becomes much more interesting. Siri could understand what’s in front of the user, recognize certain objects or provide contextual information without requiring them to pull an iPhone out of their pocket.

Previous reports have also mentioned improved walking navigation and location-aware reminders. Ming-Chi Kuo, meanwhile, discussed infrared sensors as early as 2024, potentially enabling spatial audio improvements and gesture recognition.

The broader strategy is becoming clearer: Apple wants to give Siri “eyes.”

A preview of Apple’s next wearable generation

These AirPods make even more sense when viewed as part of Apple’s broader product roadmap.

The company is also reportedly developing AI-powered smart glasses. Camera-equipped AirPods could therefore represent an early step toward ambient computing, where an assistant understands what the user sees without constantly relying on a smartphone screen.

It is also an indirect response to Ray-Ban Meta and the growing number of devices being built around AI.

I find this concept considerably more interesting than another incremental improvement in audio quality. Many people already wear AirPods for hours every day. Adding environmental awareness could fundamentally change their purpose: they would no longer be just earbuds, but an interface for Siri and Apple Intelligence.

Privacy will be impossible to ignore

There is still one enormous issue: wearing cameras in your ears is likely to raise some predictable concerns.

Even if these sensors cannot record conventional photos or videos, people around the wearer may not immediately understand what the AirPods are analyzing.

Apple will therefore need to be extremely transparent about how the technology works, how data is processed and what indicators show when the sensors are active.

The technology itself may be useful. Getting people comfortable with it could prove harder than building the hardware.

My take

A 2027 launch ultimately makes sense. Releasing camera-equipped AirPods simply because the hardware is ready would achieve very little if Siri cannot properly understand and use the information those sensors collect.

Apple appears to be building a new category around Visual Intelligence, rather than adding a flashy gimmick to its earbuds.

The macOS video does reveal something important, though: this is no longer just an abstract rumor. Apple is actively experimenting with the concept and appears far enough along to have created demonstration material.

2027 could mark one of the biggest transformations AirPods have seen.

FAQ

Will camera-equipped AirPods launch in 2026?

The latest reports suggest a commercial launch remains planned for 2027, despite an earlier version apparently being part of Apple’s 2026 roadmap.

Will AirPods be able to take photos?

Apparently not. The sensors are expected to be low-resolution and primarily designed to analyze the environment for Siri and AI-powered features.

What will the AirPods cameras be used for?

They could allow Siri to understand the user’s surroundings, identify visible objects and provide contextual information or navigation assistance.

Is Apple also developing smart glasses?

Yes. Reports indicate Apple is also developing smart glasses with cameras, microphones and AI capabilities, placing camera-equipped AirPods within a broader wearable strategy.

Apple may have accidentally given us an early look at one of its most intriguing upcoming products.
