Apple\u2019s Mail app has always had a strange status: installed by default, nicely integrated into the ecosystem, visually clean\u2026 but not exactly loved. When it comes to finding an old message or replying quickly, many users still end up opening Gmail or Outlook. With iOS 27, Apple seems ready to fix that gap: better search, contextual suggestions, and the arrival of Siri AI inside Mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The most useful new feature is search. In iOS 27, Mail no longer simply ranks results based on keywords and dates. The app adopts a new relevance system designed to better understand what the user is actually trying to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A typical example is an order placed with a retailer. By typing the store\u2019s name, Mail should surface the receipt or delivery tracking message rather than an old promotional newsletter. It is not the kind of feature that steals the show during a keynote, but in real life, it is exactly the sort of detail that saves five minutes in an overloaded inbox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Apple is arriving late here. Gmail and Outlook have already set a pretty high standard. But Mail has one major advantage: it lives at the heart of the iPhone. If search becomes reliable, many users may stop feeling like they are using the default app only because it is already there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The second major change comes from Siri AI. In Mail, the assistant can summarize an email, retrieve a specific piece of information, extract a flight number, track a package, or add a task to Reminders. It can also perform direct actions, such as deleting messages from a specific sender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is where Apple\u2019s vision starts to make sense: Siri no longer just answers a question, it acts within the right context. A booking email, an order to track, a date to add to the calendar\u2026 everything becomes less fragmented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is, however, a major limitation for European users. Apple has indicated that Siri AI will not be available at launch in iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 in the European Union, due to ongoing tensions around the DMA. In France and other EU countries, some advanced Mail features linked to Siri AI may therefore be missing at first. That is a real bump in the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mail also benefits from Write with Siri. The tool can draft a message, review a draft, correct mistakes, or rewrite a reply. The most interesting promise is not text generation itself, which we have already seen everywhere, but the ability to adapt to the user\u2019s own style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Apple says Siri AI can reflect a person\u2019s tone, punctuation, and writing habits. AI-generated replies often sound too polished, almost impersonal. If Mail manages to produce drafts that genuinely sound like the person sending them, the feature will become much more convincing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Smart Replies follow the same logic. Instead of offering three generic answers, iOS 27 should suggest short, more natural messages. For quick everyday replies, this could save time without making the user feel like they are sending a copy-and-paste AI response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Contextual suggestions are also becoming more visible. An email containing a booking can suggest adding it to Calendar. A message with an address can open Maps. Package tracking can lead to Wallet. Third-party apps can now take part in this system too, making the whole experience feel less closed than before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Call Context is one of the smartest ideas. When calling a business, the iPhone can display relevant information from an email, such as a booking number or order reference. It is not flashy, but it is exactly the kind of feature that makes a smartphone genuinely practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
iOS 27 does not turn Mail into a revolution. And that is probably a good thing. Email does not need to become magical: it needs to be fast, reliable, and able to surface the right information at the right moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My take is simple: the real star of this update is not Siri AI, but search. If it lives up to Apple\u2019s promises, Mail could become an app people actually choose to use again. The European uncertainty remains, though, and it may make the experience less complete at launch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
