With iOS 27, the most interesting change is not just the arrival of a smarter Siri, but the appearance of a dedicated Siri app, designed as a modern conversational interface, much closer to what users already know from ChatGPT.

According to the elements found in the beta, this app would allow users to quickly switch between Siri AI and ChatGPT, although with a few limits that say a lot about Apple’s strategy.

A Siri app that finally feels like a modern assistant

In iOS 27, Siri would no longer be just that voice bubble floating above the screen. Apple is testing a full Siri app, with a text field, conversation history, support for images and files, and an interface closer to a classic chatbot.

This is a bigger change than it may seem. Apple no longer wants Siri to simply answer quick commands. It wants Siri to become a real entry point for AI on the iPhone.

The most interesting detail concerns ChatGPT. In the Siri app, users can long-press the input field, choose the “Ask…” option, and then select either Siri or ChatGPT. For now, only these two choices appear to be available, although this structure clearly leaves the door open to other services in the future.

Apple is not turning ChatGPT into Siri’s official replacement. It is integrating it as a temporary alternative, available when a request needs a different kind of intelligence.

A useful switch, but not yet seamless

On paper, the idea is excellent. In practice, the beta still shows some limits. Conversation context does not move from one assistant to the other: ChatGPT does not see what was said to Siri, and Siri does not recover what was discussed with ChatGPT.

That makes sense from a privacy perspective, but it feels less natural in daily use. Another odd detail: when closing and reopening the app, the system currently returns to Siri, even if ChatGPT had been selected in an ongoing conversation. It is not yet clear whether this is a beta bug or intentional behavior.

ChatGPT also appears inside the Siri app even when the ChatGPT extension is not enabled in Siri settings. Apple is clearly testing multiple layers of integration.

Apple does not want to lose control of Siri

My read is simple: Apple has understood that Siri can no longer stand alone against ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude. But Apple also does not want to turn the iPhone into a simple launcher for external chatbots.

Its solution is very Apple-like: allow openness, but inside a controlled, readable and carefully managed environment.

That is probably the right compromise. Siri needs to remain the system assistant, the one that understands apps, settings, messages, the screen and the user’s personal context. ChatGPT, on the other hand, becomes the tool users call when they need generation, explanation, analysis or rewriting with more depth.

This separation may feel frustrating, but it also avoids mixing everything together, especially when personal data is involved.

iOS 27 is becoming the update of the new Siri

iOS 27 beta 2 is already available for developers, while Apple is expected to release a public beta in July and the final version in the autumn.

This version is shaping up to be one of the most AI-focused iPhone updates ever, with a Siri rebuilt around Apple Intelligence, richer conversations, better understanding of personal context and deeper actions inside apps.

The big question remains: how many iPhones will actually get all these features? As often happens with local AI, the most advanced functions will depend on hardware. iOS 27 may run on many models, but the new Siri AI experience will require iPhones compatible with Apple Intelligence, and some heavier features could be limited to the newest models.

Final thoughts

What Apple is preparing with Siri and ChatGPT feels more important than a simple hidden button inside a beta. It may be the beginning of a Siri that is less arrogant, but far more useful.

Rather than pretending its assistant can do everything, Apple seems to be accepting a more realistic idea: Siri should orchestrate, understand the iPhone’s context and, when needed, hand the task over to a more specialized AI.

The real test will come with everyday use. If switching between Siri and ChatGPT remains too rigid, the experience will feel artificial. If Apple makes it smoother before the final release, iOS 27 could be the moment when Siri finally stops being the weak link of the iPhone.

FAQ

Will ChatGPT replace Siri in iOS 27?

No. Based on the current beta, ChatGPT becomes an option inside the Siri app, but Siri remains the default main assistant.

Can ChatGPT be chosen as the default assistant?

Not for now. The app automatically goes back to Siri, and there does not seem to be a permanent setting to make ChatGPT the main model.

Are Siri and ChatGPT conversations shared?

No. Context does not move from one assistant to the other, which limits continuity but reinforces data separation.

Is a ChatGPT account required?

Not necessarily. Apple allows ChatGPT to be used without an account, although signing in can unlock benefits linked to the user’s account.

Apple finally seems ready to rethink Siri in a meaningful way.
