iOS 27, Apple prepares the iPhone for visual AI

Apple seems ready to play one of its most delicate games in years: turning Siri from a slightly outdated assistant into a true intelligent hub for the iPhone. The latest rumors about iOS 27 point exactly in that direction, describing a system much more focused on AI, with major changes coming to Siri, Camera, Photos and Shortcuts.

WWDC 2026, scheduled from June 8 to June 12, will be the ideal stage to understand what Apple is really preparing. The company has already confirmed that the event will also cover advances related to artificial intelligence. So AI is no longer a side topic: it is becoming the core of Apple’s next major software phase.

Siri gets a new role and becomes more central

The most interesting change could be a possible standalone Siri app, with an interface closer to modern chatbots. It would no longer be just about launching a voice command with the side button or by saying “Hey Siri”, but about having a real space where users can chat, type, attach content and keep a history of interactions.

According to online reports, Siri could also be integrated into the Dynamic Island, with a new “Search or Ask” feature accessible from the top of the screen. The idea makes sense: Apple probably does not want to create “yet another AI app” that people open from time to time, but rather an intelligent layer that is always available, able to understand context and step into everyday use.

Apple, though, will need to be careful. Users are not just asking for a prettier or more spectacular Siri. They want a Siri that is finally reliable. Elegant animations do not matter much if the assistant still struggles with simple requests.

Camera could become a visual search engine

The other big change could involve the Camera app. iOS 27 may introduce a dedicated Siri mode designed to analyze objects, text, places and images directly from the viewfinder. The iPhone would no longer be just a tool for taking photos, but also a way to understand what we are looking at.

Apple already has a foundation with Visual Intelligence, currently linked mainly to compatible models and Camera Control. Bringing it directly into the Camera app would make the whole experience much more natural. A product, a document, a plant, a food label? Open the camera and ask. This is one of the most interesting directions for mobile AI: fewer generic chats, more real-world usefulness.

There is also talk of a more customizable Camera app, with adjustable controls and shortcuts. For those who use the iPhone seriously for photos and videos, this would be a small but long-awaited revolution.

Photos focuses on generative editing and natural commands

The Photos app is expected to receive tools such as Reframe and Extend. The first would intelligently adjust framing and perspective; the second would generate missing parts of an image, for example by completing a cropped background.

The idea is not new: Google, Adobe and Samsung already offer similar features. The real question is how Apple will integrate them. If the experience is clean, fast and consistent with the Photos library, these tools could become genuinely useful, not just the usual impressive keynote demo.

Reliability remains the key issue. Some rumors suggest these features may not yet be fully polished. Apple could present them at WWDC and then release them later, perhaps with iOS 27.1.

Shortcuts becomes easier to use

The Shortcuts app could also receive a major boost. Instead of building automations step by step, users would simply describe what they want in natural language. That would be a huge shift, because Shortcuts is already powerful, but still too intimidating for many everyday users.

In my view, this is one of the smartest moves. AI should not only generate images or answer questions: it should remove friction. If I can say “when I leave the office, start my playlist, send my arrival time and activate driving mode”, then automation stops being something reserved for power users.

Final thoughts

iOS 27 looks like Apple’s attempt to catch up without distorting the iPhone experience. The most convincing approach is not to copy ChatGPT inside iOS, but to place AI where it can actually be useful: in the camera, in photos, in automations and in personal search.

The promise is strong, but risky. After expectations around Apple Intelligence were not always fully met, Apple cannot afford another “almost ready” AI. This time, it has to work well, talk less and solve real problems.
